Philosophy of Education

For many years I struggled with defining what my philosophy of education truly was, understanding my values and beliefs changed with every interaction I faced, every community I engaged with. It was only in graduate school that I realized why pinning down a response was so difficult. My philosophy of education represents who I am as a person in that current time and moment. How I have and will continue to develop as an educator, embracing change and encouraging flexibility in every community I'm a part of. This is why I believe it is of utmost importance we see the classroom through a lens of flexibility.

Having a flexible classroom that goes beyond that of the traditional space, pushes students to lean into discomfort so they can further work to expand their knowledge and grow as people. Looking at the world through an equity-lens we must also work to provide students with a space where they can express their identity and share the prior experiences that have impacted them. Through the lens of a flexible classroom it is important to include hands-on education to spark creativity and encourage critical thinking. As a result, students are able to create a stronger connections between themselves and the communities they are a part of. Engaging with those around them through the recognition of their own identity and the use of their own experiences.

In this visual there are three main strands of hair that contribute to a strong, yet flexible classroom experience for students.

Strand 1: Prior Experiences

Through the inclusion of prior experiences in education we can increase the students understand of concepts as they are able to connect it to their lives.

Strand 2: Identity

Having students define their identity allows them to take a stance on complex issues in society. They are better able to make claims and argue from evidence that relate to their prior experience.

Strand 3: Hands-on Education

Through hands-on education experiences students are given the ability to explore and question challenging concepts that supports their critical thinking.

While each of these concepts are individually important, together they create an even stronger, holistic, and inclusive education for students.
