Allie Dumas Teaching Portfolio
I am informal educator working to ensure students have the opportunity to express their identity in any classroom. I believe through the use of a students prior experiences and the implementation of hands-on education we can create a flexible classroom that works for all students.

I am a white-female educator that grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio. From preschool through twelfth grade I attended Hathaway Brown, an all-girls school in Shaker Heights, Ohio. During my time at Hathaway Brown I was a member of the varsity lacrosse team and the girls FIRST Robotics team. I participated in a variety of activities including vocal arts, science fairs, and the global scholars program. This experience gave me the opportunity to express my identity and chose the path that was right for me.

I attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies: Global Environment and a Minor in Biology. As a member of the women's lacrosse team, the Archons Society, and the Environmental Community Organization, I learned a diverse set of skills such as teamwork, leadership, time management, and collaboration.

After my undergraduate education, I worked as an AmeriCorps VISTA for the Cumberland River Compact (CRC). While in service, I had the opportunity to teach over 2,000 students through a variety of education programs including the CRC Creek Critters program. My year at CRC inspired me to consider a longer career in informal education. As a result, I decided to attend the University of Washington's Masters in Education program through the IslandWood Education for Environment and Community residency.

I recently received my Masters in Education from the University of Washington. While there I worked to learn more about many skills including culturally responsive teaching techniques, the benefits of dual coding, and how to help students develop their critical thinking skills. I hope to further develop my teaching techniques and learn from others throughout my career, working to further my skills as a continual learning and encouraging a holistic and flexible classroom for all.
